During Smooth Air's exemplary career he compiled a record of 6
wins, 5 seconds and 3 thirds in 17 starts, which included seven
Graded performances, while posting six triple digit Beyer Speed
Figures and earnings of $1,117,200.
Racing in the colors of his breeder, Mount Joy Stables, he
launched his 2-year-old campaign with a front-running, three-
length victory in maiden special weight company at Calder Race
Course. Smooth Air was then stakes-placed in
his second and third starts - in the Dr. Fager division of the
Florida Stallion Stakes and the Jack Price Juvenile Stakes. On the
board in all four juvenile starts, he finished the season with an
allowance victory at Calder scoring by 4 3/4 lengths.
Smooth Air kicked off his sophomore campaign with a tactical
winning performance in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes at
Gulfstream Park, defeating Grade 1 performers Big Truck and
Coal Play. In the Grade 1 Florida Derby, he finished second to
Kentucky Derby-winner Big Brown, leaving the 10 remaining
contenders 7 1/2 lengths in his wake. Smooth Air added a four-
length victory in the Grade 2 Ohio Derby to his resume for trainer
Bennie Stutts Jr., and concluded his 3-year-old campaign with
three stakes wins and earnings of $661,700.
Facing the nation's best sprinters/milers at four, he continued to
display exceptional form, capturing the $300,000
Gulfstream Park Handicap-G2 and registering a sharp runnerup
performance in the prestigious $600,000 Shadwell Metropolitan
Handicap-G1 at Belmont Park.
